Love only grows in the palm of an open hand. That’s where generosity comes in handy! It helps us from becoming stiff and self-centered. If we become too obsessed with building the best harbor for ourselves and decorating it with pride and beautiful boats which we forget to ever sail, then we miss the whole point (see part 1 of this post). Once you have a strong love for yourself, it is time to share it with others.
Love your neighbor as yourself
There is a precious gift in this instruction: at this point, the more you give the more what and how you give nourishes yourself. It sounds like a cliché but when you have genuinely experienced it, you definitively know it and the self doesn’t become a problem anymore because it gets nourished all along.
It’s like welcoming all other boats into your harbor and having a huge summer party!
But beware not to look at it from the standpoint of pride and self gain.
It’s not about getting the best harbor to increase its market value. You want to grow love not pride. Generosity is necessarily free of expectations and returned gain. That’s a very tricky one because you get happy by seeing others getting happy through what you did. And that’s great! The problem starts when your action is directed with the expectation to get happy yourself.
Finally, there is another beauty in this instruction: we don’t choose our neighbors. It doesn’t matter who they are. On the contrary. Neighbors are strangers at first and it takes us getting out of our comfort zone to see them as another piece of ourselves. Remember the tale of the disturbing neighbor in this previous post: nothing is impossible! Some boats are just more complicated to maneuver into the harbor….
So are you ready to open your sails full speed?
